CitySprout is a Community Interest Company. Here's what that means...
CICs are companies set up to benefit the community. This means that all profits which CitySprout makes are invested back into distributing more free decks.
Further down the track, we also intend to deliver hands-on workshops about urban plants. This is with the aim of removing as many barriers as possible from people seeking education about the natural world which they live in.
Another part of being a CIC is, if we ever choose to fold CitySprout then all it's assets are passed on to another CIC or charity. Our nominated charity is Black2Nature who do brilliant work to people visibly of colour into nature.

Hello, I'm Max...
Access to nature can be restricted for many reasons, including location, fear, mobility and background. Since moving to Bristol, living in a city has meant I've had to adapt my love for the natural world.
Outside in Bristol, I can always hear a hum of cars and see concrete, but there are rarely times I can't see a plant. Cities harbour a wealth of wildlife, it's just different to what many of us imagine as wild.
I came up with CitySprout as an attempt to connect people with nature, regardless of how easy it is for them to get to wild places. By helping people notice plants on their doorstep, I hope people will feel more connected to nature, themselves and their communities.

Hello, I'm Ruby.
I work as a freelance mycological & botanical illustrator -creating illustrated foraging ID posters and other printed goods- and work by commission for organisations dedicated to social and environmental justice.
My foraging workshops teach people about wild food, medicine and crafts, and encourage the growth of creative connection to nature. I think there’s a lot of power to be found through foraging and spending time in the natural world –it’s a source of rest, community, inspiration, and can be a reckonable act of resistance against oppressive systems that seek to dominate through division. Spending time within –and as part of– entangled ecologies reminds us we are whole, and allows us to imagine and to create more liberated futures.
Aside from freelance illustration and foraging, I mostly create figurative portraits in charcoal, pencil and oil paint that are traditional in technique but expressive in style. I share these skills and create inclusive spaces for others to practice in the regular life drawing sessions I facilitate and teach.

Entering and winning the Woodland Trust's Igniting Innovation competition was a turning point for the project. The game was funded £6000. This has gone towards illustration, this website and the first round of manufacture, including freely distributing 100 decks.
There's something incredibly empowering about having a leading charity put trust in you and your project. Apart from monthly mentoring and options for additional support, they completely leave us to it. The competition is open to all 16-25 year olds with an idea which could help the natural world, and we couldn't recommend entering enough.

Start-Up Funding...

Thanks to this startup funding from the Woodland Trust, we now mostly rely on profits made from selling CitySprout and donations.

CitySprout wouldn't be the same without the help from lots of lovely people. Big big thank yous to everyone who's helped, however big or small.
In particular, huge thanks to: Tammie, Hazel, Racheal, Paul, Xander, El and Alina.
